The Woodward County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) is now accepting applications for the appointment of a new Woodward County Sheriff. This appointment will follow the retirement of the current sheriff, effective June 30, 2025. Per Oklahoma Statutes (51 O.S. § 10) and the Oklahoma Constitution, the BOCC is responsible for appointing a qualified individual to serve as Sheriff. The appointed Sheriff will begin their duties on July 1, 2025, and serve until a successor is elected through a special election scheduled to align with the 2026 filing period, runoff primary, and general election dates. Application Details; Deadline to Apply: April 18, 2025 Where to Get an Application: Applications are available at the Woodward County Clerk’s Office or can be downloaded below. Where to Submit: Completed applications, along with a résumé, must be submitted to the County Clerk’s Office by the deadline. Optional: Applicants may also submit letters of recommendation from Woodward County residents. Next Steps in the Process; April 21, 2025: The BOCC will begin reviewing applications and scheduling interviews. Interviews will be conducted in executive session, in accordance with Oklahoma law. May 12, 2025: The BOCC intends to announce the appointed Sheriff and proclaim a special election to fill the unexpired term. All final decisions will be made in open session, in compliance with Oklahoma’s Open Meeting Act. Qualifications; Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements outlined in Oklahoma Statutes, Title 19, Sections 132 & 510, including: Being a qualified elector of Woodward County at time of appointment Meeting minimum law enforcement experience or training, Holding required certifications.
